Admission criteria
Under Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a student is eligible to attend a francophone school if he or she meets at least one of the following conditions:
- French is the mother tongue, still understood, of one or other of the parents
- One of the parents was educated in French as a first language in Canada*.
- One of the brothers/sisters has received or is receiving instruction in French as a first language in Canada.
*This refers to instruction in schools where French is taught as a first language, not as a second language (as taught in French immersion schools).
EXCEPTIONAL CASES
In the spirit of section 23 of the Charter, which aims to preserve the vitality of French-speaking communities in a minority setting, and in keeping with its remedial objective, CSCN may admit to its schools :
- A child, whose parent is a Canadian citizen, wishes to rediscover Francophone culture and identity.
Example: a grandparent is Francophone, but the child's parent did not have the opportunity to have access to Francophone education. - A child of a French-speaking parent, who is a permanent or temporary resident (excluding visitors), who wishes to maintain the French language, culture and identity of his or her child.
Example: an immigrant whose first language learned and still understood is French.
In all cases, at least one parent must reside in Alberta.
To register an exceptional case, please contact the school you are interested in or the Central Office during July and August.
